Wildlife Photo Contest Rules
Theme 2024 : Diversity through the animal
Every survivor experiences impacts following sexual assault. The CALACS francophone d’Ottawa is launching this photo contest to offer collective healing. The selected photos will depict connection and solidarity for the survivors/victims. Animals are our lifelong allies. As such, your photo must essentially reflect the safety, freedom, and strength of survivors/victims.
Important dates:
- Contest starts: February 1st, 2024
- Contest closes: April 14th, 2024, at midnight
- Unveiling of the 5 winners: May 23rd, 2024 during the Victims and Survivors of Crime week, an event organized by the CALACS francophone d’Ottawa.

CALACS francophone d’Ottawa Grand Prize
- $1,000 cash prize
- Publication of the finalist’s photo on social media
- 3+ exhibits in multiple Ottawa public locations
Exploration Prize
- $500 cash prize
- Publication of the finalist’s photo on social media
- 3+ exhibits in multiple Ottawa public locations
French Language Services Prize
- $500 cash prize, sponsored by the Comité Réseau d’Ottawa
- Publication of the finalist’s photo on social media
- 3+ exhibits in multiple Ottawa public locations
Diversity Prize
- For animal-free photos, featuring landscape, water, land, flower
- $500 cash prize
- Publication of the finalist’s photo on social media
- 3+ exhibits in multiple Ottawa public locations
First-time Prize
- $250 cash prize
- Publication of the finalist’s photo on social media
- 3+ exhibits in multiple Ottawa public locations
CONTEST ENTRY FEES
Each entrant agrees to pay the entry fee through the online contest entry form. If the participant cannot pay via PayPal, please contact

CONTEST RULES
- Photos including persons or parts thereof will be automatically excluded from the contest.
- French and English-speaking residents of Canada aged 16 and over are eligible to the contest. Employees of the CALACS francophone d’Ottawa, members of the board of administrators, jury members, and people they live with, are not eligible to participate.
- Each participant must pay the entry fees and it must be made through PayPal.
- Each participant must complete the online entry form to officially enter the contest.
- Each participant certifies that they are the author and sole copyright owner of the photograph(s) submitted.
- Each participant certifies that they have obtained the consent of the persons to whom the pets belong in the photographs and releases the CALACS francophone d’Ottawa from any legal action that may be brought as a result of the publication of the photos submitted to the contest.
- Each participant will provide information on the type of animal and where the photos were taken. All photos must have been taken in Canada.
- For the Diversity Prize photos, the same rules are applied: photos must be taken in Canada, and we must be allowed to publish the location.
- Each participant may submit a maximum of 6 photos.
- Photos submitted must not have won another contest. If a submitted photo has won another contest and the participant is one of the 5 winners, CALACS francophone d'Ottawa will request a refund of the cash prize that the winner received.
CATEGORIES
- Wildlife: Wildlife in the natural environment (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects).
- Birds: In the wild.
- Domestic animals: Large or small, adapted by captive breeding to a life closely linked to humans. This includes domesticated animals who live on a farm (horses, cattle, sheep) and companion animals (dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, etc.).
- For the Diversity Prize only: Photos of trees, landscapes, rocks, or flowers are permitted.
FRAMING, RESOLUTION AND SIZING OF PHOTOS
- Photos must be submitted via the online entry form, in color or black & white.
- The online entry form includes a section where you can upload your photos. The photos you will be sending with the form will need to be in low resolution. A file that is too large cannot be included in your registration form.
- If you are a finalist, the CALACS francophone d’Ottawa will contact you and ask for a high-resolution digital version of the selected photos to be sent by using We Transfer (https://wetransfer.com/).
High-resolution photos (finalists):
- For print quality, digital images must be saved in JPG or JPEG format, 3000 pixels or higher.
- Each photo must be formatted to be printed on 16’’ x 24’’ size. If unable to print in 16 X 24, the photo will automatically be eliminated from the contest.
- Each photo selected as one of the 5 winners will be framed by CALACS francophone d’Ottawa. The framing will include the artist’s name, the CALACS logo and a quote written by the CALACS that relates to the theme.
- The CALACS francophone d’Ottawa cannot be held liable for any degradation or loss of the photos entered in the contest.
JURY MEMBERS AND WINNER SELECTION PROCESS
The jury consists of 4 members: a photographer, the project manager, CALACS francophone d’Ottawa’s employees and a survivor from the community.
All submitted photos are judged on the technical and aesthetic quality of the images, the composition of the image, and the expression related to the “Power of Diversity” theme.
The CALACS francophone d’Ottawa will be unveiling the 5 winners at the training day on May 23, 2024 at the Maison de la Francophonie d’Ottawa (2720 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2B 8M3, Canada). The winners must be available to receive their prize by attending the event in person. If attending in person is not possible, a virtual presence will be made available through the Zoom platform.
WINNERS CONTRIBUTION AND ENGAGEMENT
- For high resolution photos: The 5 winners must have submitted their high quality digital photo via the online contest entry form (saved in JPG format, have a high resolution of 300 dpi and may be lower but never lower than 100 dpi, then 3000 pixels and higher. The CALACS will need to be able to print in 16 X 24 inches. If the finalist does not have a quality photo, they will not be eligible to enter.
- Each winner will grant the CALACS francophone d’Ottawa the right to print and sell up to 3 examples of the finalist photo and accepts that it will be printed in greeting cards format to support a fundraiser. Following the unveiling on May 23rd, 2024, the CALACS francophone d’Ottawa will post the photos for sale on its website (www.calacs.ca) and there is no limit on the duration of the sale.
- As part of the Victims and Survivors of Crime Week event on May 23rd, 2024, the CALACS francophone d’Ottawa will hold a draw and offer some of the winning photos from the previous year.
- The winners will be notified that they were selected, before the unveiling. We ask them to not release the results prior to the awards being presented. They must be available to receive their prize in person on May 23rd, 2024, during the Victims and Survivors of Crime Week event. If travel is not a possibility, a virtual presence is available, although we would greatly appreciate a physical presence. For more information, please email calacs@calacs.ca.
